4.1. Methodological overview

The methodology followed in this course is oriented towards the achievement of the learning objectives. It is based on active methodologies that favor the development of critical thinking. A wide range of teaching and learning tasks are implemented, such as lectures, practice sessions, autonomous work and assessment tasks.

Students are expected to participate actively in the class throughout the semester.

If necessary, classroom materials will be available via Moodle.

Further information regarding the course will be provided on the first day of class.

4.2. Learning tasks

This is a 6 ECTS (150 hours) course organized as follows:

• Lectures (40 hours).
• Practice sessions (20 hours). Sessions where students work with case studies and problem-solving tasks.  
• Autonomous work (20 hours).
• Individual study (65 hours).
• Assessment tasks (5 hours). A set of written exams.

4.3. Syllabus

The course will address the following topics:

1. The standard of phonetic/phonological analysis in Hispanic linguistic studies. Basic concepts for the description of Spanish sounds and phonemes.
2. Spanish vowels. Definition and description from an articulatory and acoustic phonetic perspective. Vowel sequences. Spanish vowel phonemes. The determination of phonological oppositions and of distinctive vowel features.
3. Spanish consonants. Definition and description from an articulatory and acoustic phonetic perspective. Spanish consonant phonemes. The determination of phonological oppositions and of distinctive consonant features.
4. Syllable, accent and intonation in Spanish.
5. Morphonology. Some problems in Spanish morphonology.
